Description

Red Wine: 2010 | Domaine Saint Prefert | Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Speciale Vieilles Vignes Clairette

Light toasty brioche and macadamia nut notes lead to even fuller flavors of mango, quince, creamed pear and glazed peach, yet this stays racy and defined, with bitter lemon, citrus oil and pink grapefruit accents that flash through the very long finish.

Reviews:

  • Wine Advocate: Even better is Isabel Ferrando’s old-vine 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Speciale, which is 100% Clairette barrel-fermented. Smoky citrus and hints of pear jam, white currants and quince, along with some subtle wood spice are all present in this full-bodied wine, which retains wonderful delineation and freshness. It should drink nicely for another 4-5 years, and possibly age much, much longer. There are so few 100% Clairettes, it is hard to know exactly where this could go, but I was excited by it. Ferrando’s 2009s are slightly fatter and more buttery, which is in keeping with the vintage character.
  • Stephen Tanzer: Green-tinged gold. Highly perfumed bouquet of citrus and orchard fruits, with complicating notes of anise, mace, jasmine and iodine. Stains the palate with intense lemon rind and pear flavors that are complemented by a deeper touch of sweet butter. Clings impressively on the finish, with the anise and iodine notes strongly echoing.

Producer Information

Domaine Saint Préfert is a wine estate based in the well-known Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of the southern Rhône Valley. The estate was founded by Fernand Serre around a century ago and was one of the first domaines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to sell its wine in bottles in the 1930s. Saint Préfert has been owned since 2003 by Isabel Ferrando and is best known for its quality production of traditional Châteauneuf red and white blends. The estate is located on an 80-hectare (198-acre) plot of land in the southwestern sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyard is planted to some 13 hectares (32 acres) of vines that are around 60+ years old, producing low, concentrated yields. Some of the oldest vines on the estate are Mourvèdre, planted as far back as 1920, although there are also plantings of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsaut. Soils are composed of gravel, rock, stones, and large pebbles known as galets. Saint Préfert practices selection massale whereby vines are replanted with cuttings from the vineyard’s exceptionally old vines. Domaine Saint Préfert’s wine portfolio includes four Châteauneuf-du-Pape red blends, two Châteauneuf-du-Pape white blends, and a red Côtes du Rhône. The domaine’s Vielles Vignes Clairette Blanc is unique to the lineup, made from 100 percent Clairette from dry-farmed vines that are as much as 100 years old. The wine is aged two years in wood before being bottled without filtration in magnum format bottles.
