Dark fruit with fresh notes of wild strawberry overflow from the glass. Black cherry, cedar, brown sugar and gentle toasty oak envelope the mountain tannin so characteristic of this site. The energy and intensity is apparent on the long and layered finish.

• Wine Advocate: Deep garnet colored, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Lotus Vineyard (containing 7% Petit Verdot) offers up a gorgeous nose of fruitcake, potpourri and dried herbs over a core of crème de cassis, blueberry compote and raspberry tart. Medium to full-bodied, finely structured and with great freshness and approachability, it gives a wonderful core of muscular fruit and a long, mineral-laced finish.

• James Suckling: Exhibiting layers of complexity, finesse and nuance, this offers a captivating opening mix of gravel-laced plum and blackberry flavors. Perfumed notes of sweet plum, cassis and cherry rise into the finish. The tannins are rich, loamy and fine-grained.

Producer Information

Dana Estates is a wine producer of Napa Valley, loccated at the foot of the Mayacamas mountain range. It produces a range of premium single-vineyard wines, mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon with a small inclusion of Sauvignon Blanc. There are three single vineyards spread across the Rutherford and Howell Mountain AVAs. The Helms Vineyard, in Rutherford, is planted solely to Cabernet Sauvignon, and is planted on gentle slopes with well-draining, gravelly loam soils. In Howell Mountain, the Lotus and Hershey vineyards have slightly cooler climates and are both planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, the latter with a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc. In the winery, grapes are fermented in either in concrete tanks, oak uprights or small barrels subject to the character of each vineyard plot. Dana’s red wines are all aged in French oak barrels, mostly new, for up to two years depending on the vintage. The Sauvignon Blanc is also aged in barrel, although the percentage of new oak is much less.
