The 2018 Pinot Noir Occidental offers its classic crunchy red and black berry fruit on the nose with accents of saline, tree bark, violet and licorice. The light to medium-bodied palate has a fresh, chalky frame and perfumed fruit character, finishing youthfully wound.

Reviews:

  • Wine Advocate: The 2018 Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard is clean and bright on the nose with aromas of crushed shell, white blossoms, hay and Bosc pear. The light-bodied palate follows in the same style, with crisp, mineral-driven character and a long, delicate but energetic finish. This is wound very tight and will require plenty more time in bottle.
  • Vinous: The 2018 Pinot Noir Occidental Vineyard is a gorgeous, wonderfully complex wine endowed with myriad shades of dimension. Blood orange, mint and spice add brilliant top notes to a Pinot built on a real sense of vertical intensity. The Occidental just soars out of the glass with stunning depth and pedigree to burn. I would give it a few years in bottle to come together, but it is pretty special, even in the early going. A change in pruning in this site yielded a Pinot that is just a bit less overt than some previous editions, although the vintage is, naturally, a factor as well.

Producer Information

“The mission at Ceritas is to craft single vineyard expressions of place through Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The sources for our fruit along the Sonoma Coast and westernmost Russian River Valley — Porter-Bass, Ritchie, Escarpa, Helgren and Deermeadow — were carefully chosen for their winegrowing merits and also for their singularity. Each allows us the opportunity to craft balanced and distinct wines which will stand out on the dinner table. Just as oysters grown in Tomales Bay taste altogether different from those grown in Puget Sound, our wines are reflective of the growing seasons and soils from which they came.
In the winery, we keep things simple. We look at winemaking from a standpoint that owes more to tradition than it does to cutting-edge innovation — we more often find ourselves trying to understand what not to do rather than what to do. The crafting of each vintage is like a journey, in which nature sets its own course. Our role is to adapt, to proceed with humility, and to learn.”
