Description
Red Wine: 2019 | Penfolds | Bin 169
Aromas of pure mulberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, redcurrants and a swathe of roasting herbs, such as bay leaf and sage. Iodine and nori, too. The French oak is nicely subsumed already and there’s fruit purity that really sings here. The palate has a wealth of rich and ripe blue and black-fruit flavors with plenty of extract and depth on offer. This is an impressively bold, smoothly honed and focused cabernet. Fine, polished tannins frame the long finish.

Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2019 Bin 169Cabernet Sauvignon is aromatically reticent at this stage, however the power of the fruit in the mouth in unassailable. It blossoms on the back palate and shows pedigree and impressive stature. This is a supremely elegant wine of poise and detail, couched in a framework of power and dense muscly tannin.
- James Suckling: Such impressive freshness to the aromas of pure mulberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, redcurrants and a swathe of roasting herbs, such as bay leaf and sage. Iodine and nori, too. Producer Information
Penfolds has extensive vineyard holdings located across the various winegrowing regions of South Australia. Some of these are among the most iconic properties in the country, including Magill Estate, and the Kalimna and Koonunga Hill vineyards in the northern Barossa. The Woodbury estate in the Eden Valley is planted entirely to Riesling where a cooler climate is well-suited to the variety. In comparison, the Coonawarra estate is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz on the terra rossa soil type that the region is famous for. This clay-based soil type has remarkably good drainage characteristics and is found in numerous other wine regions throughout the world, most notably La Mancha in Spain. In addition, a wide range of grape growers are also used, both in the core South Australian regions and further afield, particularly for Chardonnay. In total, around 220 different sources contribute to production.
