In a groundbreaking release, the House of Suntory has unveiled its most mature blended Japanese whisky to date: Hibiki 40 Years Old. This exceptional spirit, crafted by master blender Shinji Fukuyo, represents a harmonious marriage of whiskies from Suntory’s renowned Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Chita distilleries.
The creation of Hibiki 40 Years Old is a testament to Japanese whisky-making expertise. Aged in a diverse array of casks, including mizunara Japanese oak, Spanish oak, and American oak barrels, this 40% ABV blend offers a complex flavor profile. Connoisseurs can expect to encounter aromas of Japanese loquat, dry lemon peel, and clove, followed by a palate rich with acacia honey and dry fig notes, culminating in an aromatic finish.
Fukuyo shared his vision for the whisky, stating, “This blend embodies the tranquility of ancient temples and storehouses, inviting drinkers to savor its pure, time-honed aroma and the nostalgic warmth it evokes.”
The presentation of Hibiki 40 Years Old is as meticulous as its contents. The crystal bottle, adorned with 30 facets, showcases traditional Japanese craftsmanship through maki-e techniques, mother-of-pearl inlay, and gold lacquer. This artistry extends to the packaging, with celebrated washi artist Eriko Horiki contributing to the box’s label design.
The wooden case housing the bottle is a work of art in itself, constructed from a dozen Japanese wood varieties, including pine and zelkova. Its 12 faces symbolize the annual cycle, reinforcing the whisky’s connection to time and nature.
