Edelweiss! Edelwhat? Edelwine!
Having just returned from the Wachau Valley on the Danube River in Austria, I was awash inGruner Veltliner for eight days. I never got tired or bored of this white wine, except for breakfast, where I abstained! One winery a mere ten minutes from the Danube River located near the town of Krems stood out among the fold: Berger Winery in Gedersdorf. Wow! Erich’s wines have only gotten better with each vintage over the past ten years.
Fermented entirely in stainless steel from estate grown grapes, Gruner is known for its infectious drinkability. However, this vintage has an exceptional level of clarity and complexity sometimes absent from this varietal. Certified “Fair’nGreen” sustainable with glacial age loess soil that produces bright, elegant fruit with lovely minerality and vibrant acidity, this wine will not only cleanse your palate. It will make you smile.
Purity, courage, love, and devotion akin to the Alpine Edelweiss flower emanate from this 2024 vintage. Delivering classic wine aromatics and a palate awash in green apple, Asian pear, and lime, the light spritz awakens the spring herb flavors on the palate and accentuates its earthly, lentil undertones. Try it by itself, or pair it with any lighter fare. It harkens the feeling of a Christmas or Advent Market now in full swing In Vienna! Enjoy!
